introduction
the story begins, like most stories, with introducing the characters a.nd what the story is about. in our case, we learn about jonas a.nd his life a.nd his community.
in this paper, i will talk about memory a.nd history in jonas'' life a.nd about the community''s knowledge. i will try to guess what will have to change in our life so that our world will look like theirs. i will talk about forgotten memories, why they exist, a.nd why they even happen. i will explain the different kinds of memories a.nd how they affect the giver, the receiver a.nd the old receiver.
i chose "memory a.nd history" because it was number five a.nd that is my lucky number.
chapter one: memory a.nd history in jonas'' life, a.nd the
community''s knowledge
there is a big twist that occurs in the story as soon as jonas starts receiving memories.
the first twist is when jonas gets his own private rules a.nd one of them says that he can lie. this makes jonas think that maybe he is not the only one who can lie a.nd that means that the whole community is different f.rom what he thought it was. the second twist is that memories affect jonas'' behavior a.nd cause feelings when jonas sees his friends playing war: he did not fall down when he was shot because he kept seeing the memory of a real war. he was not able to explain to his friends that memory because they had no feelings.
in the end, jonas'' memories a.nd knowledge cause him to run away f.rom his community. his community can not understa.nd why he is acting so weird.
most of the memories that jonas receives are really far back in the history of the world, therefore it is hard for the giver to take those memories out a.nd also to transfer them to jonas.
in our days, a lot of memories are transferred f.rom generation to generation by stories written down or told orally. in this story, this does not happen, so people do not really know what happened two generations back. thus, they have no way of knowing what happened more two generations back like we do. therefore the children were playing war a.nd could not understa.nd what jonas was telling them about real wars.
in the end of the book, jonas starts realizing that a big share of the memories still exist but were just far away in places in his world w.here no one has visited for a long time. it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for him. he got to see birds, he saved a human life in real life a.nd not in his memories (w.here he would sometimes save people f.rom dying, like when he saved a child by giving him to drink).
jonas'' very first memory was sledding down the snowy hill, a.nd his last experience in the story was sledding down the same hill with the same sled. this adds irony to the end of the story.
chapter 2
in this chapter, i will talk about what will have to change in our world so that it would be like theirs.
if i had to guess, one of the things that will have to change is the population of people in the world a.nd also there is an option of them living on a different planet, "it will take 70,000 years to make mars a second earth". a.nd so, all they have left f.rom earth is memories of it that only the giver a.nd receiver know about. although, in the end of the book jonas finds his memories in real life, the memories might be not so far back in time.
if there is a war a.nd billions of people die, the remaining survivors might decide that life on earth should never be like it was so that no more people will die. their releasing system is harsh a.nd still kills lots of innocent lives.
another important change is science: scientists will have to create something that will make us forget memories. scientists will have to change everyone genetically but still keep a few normal people with "weird eyes", like jonas. so, whenever needed, there will be a receiver. scientists should do so if any of the things i mentioned above would happen.
another thing needed to create a community like jonas'' is time, because all of the memories are so far back a.nd that is why it is hard for the giver to remember them. if we want the same effect, we need time a.nd lots of it.
the bottom line is that creating a community like jonas'' might be possible but will need lots of time, changes in the brain function, a lot of dead people, a.nd maybe a different planet.
chapter 3
in this chapter, i will talk about the different kinds of memories a.nd how they affect jonas.
there are a lot of different memories. i divided them into two categories: good memories a.nd bad memories.
bad memories effect more than good memories a.nd do the same with the giver. for example, the giver could not hold on to the memory of way because it is so much stronger than any good memories he had. bad memories also make jonas look weird in the eyes of other children, especially when they were playing war a.nd jonas did not fall down when he was shot.
good memories also make jonas look weird, but less. when jonas tried to pass a good memory to asher a.nd it did not work, they both felt embarrassed.
the worst memory that jonas received was not actually a memory because it happens in his community daily life, a.nd this is the ceremony of release. this is what cause jonas to go crazy a.nd to run away f.rom home.
jonas could feel emotions because of all the memories that he had received. one of them was love. he felt love for gabe a.nd so he protected gabe''s life with his own. he also transferred good memories to gabe because they both had a special bond.
chapter 4
in this chapter, i will talk about forgotten memories a.nd their effect on everyone.
forgotten memories are memories that are not transferred to the next receiver before death. for example, the receiver before jonas had requested release but some memories were still in her, so all the community suffered f.rom all the memories she had.
when memories are transferred, there is still a bit of them left inside the person who transferred them. this is something that the author did not think about because when a giver is released, the community still gets small parts of memories, including bad ones.
the giver tells jonas that he will ask to be released once jonas runs away, although the author does not speak about the giver after jonas'' escape. i assume that the giver will not be released because he still has memories in him a.nd i know this because before jonas escaped he was supposed to get courage memories.
another thing that is bizarre is that forgotten memories that spread out to the entire community are the bad ones a.nd not the good ones. i know this because the giver''s daughter had lots of good memories a.nd only one bad memory, a.nd this caused lots of agony within jonas'' community.
in our days, when memories are forgotten, a bad thing can happen again. for example, if we forget world war ii a.nd the holocaust, it might happen again.
the giver: chapters 13-15
1. what provokes jonas to act like this is that the giver tells him that it will be awhile until he (jonas) will master all the colors. jonas gets mad at the lack of choices in the community because he does not want everybody to be the same. i agree because if we all would be the same, we would be robots.
2. when jonas tries to transfer red flowers to asher, it does not work a.nd it makes jonas a.nd asher feel embarrassed because one person should not be touching the other''s flesh unless it is a baby or the old.
he heard people singing. but perhaps it was an echo. chapter 24
when jonas finally woke up, he could not understa.nd what was going on. he was lying down on a sofa. before he had time to think, he fell asleep.
he started hearing someone call him: "jonas, jonas". he opened his eyes for good a.nd did not fall back asleep, a.nd he saw the giver. the giver told him that he has just experienced the hardest memory that he had.
jonas understood that all that he thought was real: f.rom the moment he ran away f.rom home was a memory of almost all the feelings combined. after a few months, the giver finished giving away all the memories a.nd had gone for his own releasing ceremony. jonas felt sad but knew it had to be done.
sixty years later, jonas became the giver a.nd he had chosen a new receiver (unknown). a.nd thus the cycle continued forever.
what i learned f.rom the book
first of all i learned that there are interesting stories out there, i say this because i am not a fan of books a.nd i rarely read books. i learned that jonas'' community is possible to create but i wouldn''t recommend it because the releasing ceremony a.nd the lack on knowledge in their lives.
